5 Email Marketing Tips for Better Engagement
Marketing your business can be tricky, especially if you’re new to it or don’t have any experience in this field. Knowing what to market and, more importantly, how to market can be a minefield, particularly with the ever-changing algorithms on social media platforms!
Lucky for you, I’ve put together my Top 5 Email Marketing Tips that work. They work for my business and my clients.
So, without further faffing, let’s dive in and discover the magic of marketing!
1. Growing your email list
Are you growing your email marketing list? Sometimes businesses forget to grow their email contact list. They focus all their energy on servicing their existing contacts.
New subscribers are always more engaged; they’ve only just signed up and can actually still remember why they did. They are interested in you, your business and what you have to offer.
Keep attracting new sign-ups through your website, social media and other channels, offering something of value to entice, educate and entertain them.
Think about how you are growing your list right now and consider offering some of the following:
- A Discount – who doesn’t love a discount?
- A Free Template that will help and encourage them to come back for more.
- An E-Book on a subject they really want to know about or something that will help them solve a problem.
- A Checklist that will help them to identify any steps in a process or procedure that’s based on what you’re offering.
- Something that they need and will encourage them to share their email address with you!
2. Your email subject line
There is absolutely no point in writing and designing a killer e-campaign if your subject line is boring. Treat it like a movie trailer, tease the reader to open it to find out more. Open Rates are closely monitored analytics in the email marketing world. With inboxes fit to bursting, make sure your email subject line stands out. How? Here are some tips and ideas:
- Short and sweet, less is best
- Make it funny
- Make it controversial
- Ask a question?
- Make it personal
3. Personalisation
I’m always banging on about making your email marketing campaigns personal, but it’s way more than just using the merge tags to include the person’s first name.
It’s about sending content that is relevant.
We all know how annoying it is to receive an email that has nothing to do with our likes and interests, that is cold and impersonal.
Just because your communications are sent digitally doesn’t mean they need to read as if a robot has written them.
Write like you are writing to a friend; believe me, you will get much better engagement and will develop that know-like-trust relationship with your audience way faster than sending a blanket email to a large list of people you know nothing about.
4. Size isn’t everything!
When it comes to email marketing lists. Please don’t get hung up about the small number of people who have subscribed to your audience, and don’t wait until it gets to say 50, 100, or 1000 to start sending and sharing content.
Even if you have just 10 people on your list, that is 10 potential clients or customers that have shared their personal email address with you. They shared what they needed to and now it’s your turn.
If you are not sure what to say and share with your list, then get in touch and I’ll happily share some content ideas with you.
“A small list that wants exactly what you’re offering is better then a bigger list that isn’t committed”
5. Quality over quantity
Last but not least… just because emails are free (unless you have a paid subscription plan) it doesn’t mean that they should be sent out without careful planning and content quality checks.
Don’t just push out a regular weekly or monthly campaign if you have nothing to say of any quality. It’s not something to just tick off your to-do list, say on the 1st of every month, yep done that this month! You should send campaigns when you have something important, new, interesting, educational or fun to share about your business; that’s the time to send a campaign.
Bonus Email Marketing Tip!
Send that email to a targeted list; not a blanket one size fits all email. You will get much better engagement on your emails and content if you send relevant stuff to the right people.
Use the data within your email marketing platform to educate you on your audience.
Get to know your audience by checking your data; what did they click on, what did they like in your last campaign, why not send them more of that?
Analytics can go a long way to giving your audience more of what they want!
